Dear Church

Dear Church

Like all of us at Grace, I was shocked and horrified by the slaughter of the Charleston Nine five years ago. I became even more grieved when I learned that the killer, Dylann Roof, had been raised in the ELCA.

What went wrong? What did his parents and his pastor fail to do? Could “one of ours” do this?

The same year, analysis of the Religious Landscape Study found that the ELCA is the whitest, and the second least diverse American denomination. We have watched the denomination as a whole and our leadership at Grace grapple with what this means and how we can reach out and change this. I began reading and following diverse clergy and religious writers because I want to keep educating myself on this topic.

Dear Church has been one of the more challenging of the books I have read, but the challenging areas are where we grow.

I look forward to revisiting this important book and hope you'll join me via Zoom.  We’re meeting on Sunday mornings July 12, 19 and 26 @ 8:45 am.  Email to sign up!
