Like all of us at Grace, I was
shocked and horrified by the slaughter of the Charleston Nine five years ago. I
became even more grieved when I learned that the killer, Dylann Roof, had been
raised in the ELCA.
What went wrong? What did his parents and his pastor fail
to do? Could “one of ours” do this?
year, analysis of the Religious Landscape Study found that the ELCA is the
whitest, and the second least diverse American denomination. We have watched the
denomination as a whole and our leadership at Grace grapple with what this
means and how we can reach out and change this. I began reading and following
diverse clergy and religious writers because I want to keep educating myself on
Dear Church has been one of the more challenging of the books I have read,
but the challenging areas are where we grow.
